What people are saying;
I have worked with Keith for many years, his knowledge and skill of understanding children’s behaviour and empowering staff to manage the challenges they present is second to none. He has supported myself and staff with a number of pupils with SEND or experience of trauma. His humour and straight forward training methods and approachability enable him to quickly understand the issues of behaviour and make helpful suggestions to our staff. Building strong relationships with children who struggle with the school day and de-escalation strategies are at the heart of Keith’s method. I would unreservedly recommend him to any school who needs support in this area.
— Sarah Mules – Primary Executive Headteacher
Keith has been an instrumental system leader for inclusive education and helped to share the vision for Children’s Services in Norfolk County Council. I have had the privilege of working with Keith for the last 5 years and I have witnessed their remarkable contributions to the development and implementation of an inclusive offer including with Norfolk Steps and our approaches to meeting the SEND needs, particularly SEMH. Keith has demonstrated an exceptional ability to triangulate the complex nature of children’s needs, family support and systemic requirements to shape an inclusive offer that meets the diverse and individual needs of learners and their families; been a key driver of the Norfolk Steps approach, which is a positive behaviour support framework that promotes the wellbeing and resilience of children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs; been a strong advocate for the SEND agenda, ensuring that the voice and participation of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities are at the heart of decision making and service delivery; supported various initiatives and projects that have enhanced the quality and impact of inclusive education; established and maintained effective partnerships and collaborations with a range of stakeholders, such as schools, parents, carers, health and social care professionals, voluntary and community organisations, and local and national authorities; shown a high level of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to their role, as well as a continuous drive for learning and improvement; kept positive outcomes for children and young people at the heart of everything he has influenced. Keith has proven to be an invaluable asset and a positive influence on the lives of many children and young people.

Opening a brand new school is both exciting and daunting and requires a wide range of expertise to ensure it is successful. Opening a brand new SEMH residential school requires the same x 1000000. I will be eternally grateful to Keith for being the executive headteacher, SEMH guru and my absolute rock throughout the early months / years of my school’s inception. Keith’s experience of running a successful and outstanding SEMH residential school for a number of years made him my weekly (sometimes even daily) “phone a friend” for any dilemmas I found myself quandering. Keith has vast experience of working with young people who present with the most complex behaviours that challenge and harm, an extensive back catalogue of anecdotal solutions to any problem which arises and the integrity and drive to work relentlessly to ensure young people in his care have the best possible outcomes. Not only does he have the ability to make the most difficult situations feel manageable, he actively promotes self-efficacy in everyone he works with, pupils and staff. This approach comes from years of gaining on the ground knowledge and experience of SEND and applying it successfully to all he has worked with.
— Hayley Ross – SEMH Headteacher
Keith’s ongoing work has had a significant impact on the culture and knowledge of staff at the schools. The combination of cultural process questioning, practical solutions, and guidance on how to work with children who are finding mainstream a challenge, has empowered all staff members to work as a team for all needs.
— Drew Howard – Director of Primary School Improvement
Since joining the trust I have been fortunate to work closely alongside Keith in developing my role and understanding behaviour. I feel that Keith was a mentor to me and this has developed into a peer relationship where we now work together on different projects. Keith has supported me in deepening my understanding of children’s behaviour and how to support but also from leading the whole school staff with their acceptance and development of approaches which has benefitted so many children. Keith has been able to develop my skill set through discussion and being able to draw out knowledge which although I knew was there, I didn’t have the confidence to demonstrate and use. Keith has been able to give me the confidence to utilise and share these skills to the best of my ability with my team.

Keith Bates first delivered some training for me ten years ago. It was especially memorable training. The reason it was so memorable is firstly because of his engaging, interesting, humorous delivery style that makes it so fun to listen to him. Secondly, it’s his skill of showing through the stories he tells, that he understands how hard a job it is that people do, and how rewarding it is, to do the work we do in school. He gets it. He makes it feel like he is on the same level as us. Behind that depth of understanding, is a vast array of knowledge, skills and experience that can appear somewhat like magic. Any time spent listening to Keith Bates talk about behaviour is time well spent.
— Helen Plowman – Primary Headteacher
Since I changed my role from a curriculum focus to behaviour and inclusion I have found Keith’s advice and guidance invaluable. He has provided clear action points when I have not been sure what provision to offer an individual or group of individuals and when I have felt “stuck” he has been a sounding board to develop a solution with. What I have particularly liked is that Keith doesn’t tell you what you should do based on his experience, he guides you to your own solution, from your perspective with his considerable expertise and knowledge as that guide. From work with individual students, setting up in school alternative and specialist provision, to a whole school approach of behaviour management or communication with stakeholders and parents, Keith’s experience has been at the foundation of some of the biggest and most inclusive projects this mainstream school has been involved with in recent years.
— Nadia Allen – Secondary Vice Principal
Thank you Keith for the support you’ve given to myself and my team in working with children with behaviour that challenges. Your advice has been spot on (and delivered in such a way that staff really take everything on board) which has been brilliant! We’ve particularly appreciated you sharing your expertise to ensure that we made best use of available physical space when setting up our new SEMH Specialist Resource Base; the environment is now really supportive in meeting children’s needs.
— Joanna Ward – Primary Executive Headteacher
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Keith for all the support he has provided me personally and for his invaluable contributions to our school. Keith has been instrumental in supporting me in driving inclusion forward, ensuring that every child feels valued and supported. His expert advice on provisions for children with SEND has been transformative, and his direct work with families has been crucial in helping them navigate decisions regarding transitions from mainstream to specialist provisions. Keith’s provides bespoke support and CPD for all colleagues and his expertise have made a significant positive impact on our community.
